The influence of TESOL teachers' nonverbal communication(Part 1)

From my experience as a learner and now TESOL teacher, nonverbal behavior plays a vital role in foreign language classroom. I believe that the nonverbal communication between TESOL teachers and students is obviously a very useful tool for classroom management and creating an effective classroom environment. As a learner, I have witnessed the main aspects of nonverbal communication. Now I regard myself as a TESOL English teacher, including eye contact, gesture and mime, facial expression and sound projection.

Eye contact in the classroom is the most basic, which helps TESOL teachers get closer to students, understand them and make them feel involved in what happens in the classroom. In addition, it helps to attract their attention and show them that they are an important part of the course. Eye contact can also be a powerful tool for building a good relationship with learners, because TESOL teachers who use eye contact will appear in front of students and be consistent with students' needs. Through eye contact, a good TESOL teacher can understand subtle emotional reactions and judge whether students are confused or need help for any reason. However, in student-centered activities, eye contact should be avoided and teachers should pay more attention to monitoring.

Human beings can express a wide range of emotions through facial expressions. TESOL teachers should remember that their emotions will deeply affect students' emotions in a positive or negative way. Facial expressions are an effective way to create an incentive environment in the classroom. For example, a warm smile from TESOL teachers can make students feel more comfortable, eager to actively participate in the classroom and create a positive atmosphere.
