The Importance of Homework to TESOL来源:TESOL in China网址:https://www.tesoinchina.com Raise your hand if you like doing homework at school. Didn't you? Neither did I. While no one wants to do extra things outside of class, there is no denying that doing some English input between classes is a good way for our students to take control of their learning and see faster Progress in English. As teachers, we can help by assigning homework that is meaningful, relevant and engaging. I have also found that students are more likely to do the work if it is checked/used in a certain way in the next lesson. However, if all this sounds easier said than done, read on; We have five simple and fun homework tasks to share with you: 1. Game elements are really motivating The students prepared three short stories about themselves for the homework. One is true, the others are fake. In the next lesson, they told their partners their stories, and their partners asked questions to determine which stories were true. Then reverse the roles. 2. Good reasons to study at home Do you want them to remember new verbs, tense structures or vocabulary? Are you going to do a general review session next? Have your students review at home and tell them that you will have them work in teams to answer questions next week. If you like, have each team create a unique buzzer so they can "buzz" for the correct answer. The winning team gets a prize.
3. Extracurricular English collaboration can stimulate interest and build relationships Ask a question a week, invite responses, and encourage respectful dialogue and debate. Be careful; Not everyone likes social media, and you may choose a more appropriate platform to share ideas outside of class. 4. Funny riddles and tongue twisters A cowboy rode into town on Friday, stayed three days, and rode out again on Friday. How did he do it? Lateral thinking questions like the one above can be interesting, and students are reading English all the time. Or, have students practice tongue twisters at home, or translate one from their own language, or make one up. Let them share with the class next time. 5. Watch the video story and respond There are many great story videos available for students to watch at home, and after they watch the videos at home, you can follow up in class in 3 ways: 1. You ask general comprehension questions on the video. 2. Re-create the story as a lesson and draw the story from the students bit by bit with the help of the story keywords on the blackboard. 3. Sum up the story in groups. We hope the TESOL course will inspire you to choose fun, task-based homework activities with a solid focus and results. Also note that class assignments always have a meaningful follow-up.
When planning assignments, you can also take inspiration from TESOL classes and ask students to do things like play games or listen to English music. The possibilities for productive tasks are endless. Enjoy them.
